Our family has been so blessed by the men and women who poured into our lives during PFO. Every presenter, facilitator, fellow missionary and even our host family impacted our lives in significant ways. There were several “Aha!” moments that have altered our perceptions of ourselves, our call and our God. We will take the time to share a few with you now:
1). Following Jesus is exactly like playing the childhood game, “Follow the Leader.” We are expected to DO what our leader (JESUS) did and not merely memorize, quote and discuss what He said. So what did He do? “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness (Matt. 9:35).”
2). Much of how we express our Christianity is cultural and not biblical. So when we enter another culture we must be willing to throw out our cultural expressions while continuing to live out the biblical principles of our faith. “When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some (1 Corinthians 9:22).”
3). As a missionary teacher, the greatest tool in winning our students to Christ is our effectiveness as an educator. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men (Col. 3:23).”
4). We must enter the culture with our eyes and ears open and our mouth closed. “My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry (James 1:19).”
5). We must be willing to keep our opinions to ourselves and always give people the Word of God. “Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matt. 4:4).”
There were so many more nuggets of truth imparted during the past two weeks that we haven’t even begun to process and unpack in our lives. We pray that we can begin to avail ourselves to Holy Spirit in such a way that these first 5 will be evident in our daily lives. We ask that you join us in that prayer and seek to truly follow our leader, Jesus Christ the Lord!
